Villarrica Lake
The Villarrica Lake is one of the most amazing lakes you will see on our Road Cycling Tours and from the top of a volcano in our Ski Tours. It is so big that when you are on the shore whether it’s in Villarrica or in the Pucon side, it looks like the ocean.
This beautiful lake is also known as Mallolafquen in Mapuche language (the indigenous people of the area) and in its pre-historic days it was a ¨creataceous lake¨.
It is located in Chile´s Lake and Volcano District. On its east shore lies the popular town of Pucon – the capital of adventure tourism in Chile – and on its west shore lies the city of Villarrica.
During our Road Cycling season, cyclists really enjoy the breathtaking views of this huge lake and not to mention the refreshing waters with surface temperatures that range from 19 to 22°C.
During our ski season, you won’t be able to jump in the lake but you will be able to enjoy the view when you climb to the top of the Villarrica Volcano. Looking down at this amazing huge lake will just take your breath away. The lake surrounded by mountains is something you will enjoy while you´re skiing down after the long climb or if you´re just at the ski center having a cup of hot chocolate.
Caburgua Lake
Caburgua Lake is a beautiful lake located 23 km from the town of Pucon. In the summer, this lake, like the Villarrica lake is very popular with the tourist because of its warm water and surrounding mountains. One of the beaches on the lake is called ¨playa blanca¨. It is called white beach because of its white sand, very different from the sand you find on the Villarrica lake, which is a black Volcanic sand.
On our 12 days Road Cycling tour, we ride straight to this beautiful lake from the hotel. If you are here on our National Parks 9 days hiking tour, we take you to the Huerquehue National Park that lies just to the east of this great lake.
Calafquén Lake
This beautiful lake surrounded by mountains straddles the border between the Araucania Region and Los Rios Region. The Villarrica Volcano is just north of the lake.
During the summer, like the other lakes, it´s a major tourist attraction. It´s a perfect lake to practice water sports. It has a surface of 121 km2 and it’s part of the Valdivia River. Its water reaches 212 meters depth and its temperature doesn´t go over 25ºC in the summer time.
In our Road Cycling tours, we ride along side this beautiful lake and usually stop to have lunch on one of its beautiful beaches. It is just 17 km northeast of Panguipulli Lake which is where you are headed right after the picnic!
Likewise, in our Ski tours when we climb to the top of the Villarrica Volcano, if you look southwest you can take-in the view of this gorgeous lake.
Panguipulli Lake
The Panguipulli Lake is one of the ¨Seven Lakes¨ along with the Calafquen, Pirehueico, Pellaifa, Riñihue, Neltume and Villarrica Lake. It forms part of the fascinating ¨Route of the Seven Lakes¨, a scenic circuit that will make you fall in love with the South of Chile even more. This amazing lake is of glacial origin and it is enclosed by mountain ranges of the Andes all around except the west side, where the city of Panguipulli lies. In this fascinating little city, you can visit the Capuchin Church built in 1947 inspired by Swiss models.
Pirehueico Lake
Pirehueico means ¨ water worm¨ in the Mapuche language, because of its narrow and wavy worm-like shape. Located 68 km southeast of the city of Panguipulli, this lake is one of the ¨Seven Lakes¨ mentioned earlier. It is located in a geological fault that includes Panguipulli Lake and Lacar Lake which is in San Martin de Los Andes, Argentina. The Lake is drained by the famous Fuy River, a river where kayakers from all over the world come to paddle. On our Chile & Argentina 12 days Road Cycling tour we take a ferry boat from Puerto Fuy that takes us across Pirehueico Lake when we cross over to Argentina. This ferry ride lasts two hours until you arrive at Puerto Pirehueico. You will enjoy breathtaking views the whole way. Once you are in Argentina you will ride along side another beautiful lake, the Lacar Lake which takes you to the charming mountain village of San Martin de Los Andes.
Lacar Lake
The Lacar Lake is located in the province of Neuquen, Argentina. The lake has a surface area of 55 km² and a depth of 167m, with a maximum of 277m. Like many of the Argentine lakes, it drains across Chile and into the Pacific Ocean. It is surrounded by the Andes, at 630m above sea level, the area around the lake is mostly uninhabited. On its northeastern coast you will find the village of San Martin de Los Andes. This little village is charming all year round. Whether we take you there on a Ski tour or Road Cycling tour, you will enjoy the unique shops and all the mesmerizing views all around the area.
Llanquihue Lake
The Llanquihue Lake is the second largest lake in Chile, right after the General Carrera Lake. It has a surface of 877 km². Its west shore is next to the touristy city of Puerto Varas and 20 km north of the city of Puerto Montt.
During one of our Road Cycling tours, we ride around the whole lake. Since the lake is so big, it is surrounded by many interesting places. Some of these places are the Frutillar town which is a small charming village with a strong German heritage and the Osorno Volcano with its perfect cone.
Nahuel Huapi Lake
The Nahue Huapi Lake is one of the most famous and important lakes in the lake region in Argentina. It is located between the provinces of Rio Negro and Neuquen in the zone of Bariloche and Villa La Angostura. It has a surface of 529 km2 (204 sq mi), and it rests 2,510 feet (770 m) over the sea level, and has a maximum measured depth (as of 2007) of 1,437 feet (438 m).
In June 2011, the eruption of the Puyehue-Cordon Caulle Volcanic complex in Chile caused the lake to be covered in volcanic ash.
In 1903, the surrounding area of this famous lake became Argentina´s first National Park. On our Road Cycling Tours in Argentina, we practically ride half the lake in two separate rides. Road Cycling around this beautiful lake in the middle of a National Park is something you must do! Also in our ski tours in Argentina, you can appreciate this lake even more from the top. The view from some of these ski resorts such as Cerro Bayo in Villa La Angostura and Cerro Catedral in Bariloche are just incredibly mesmerizing.
